Mark DaCosta- Outgoing Mayor of the Capital City, Georgetown, Pt. Ubraj Narine expressed pride in his accomplishments in spite of the People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) efforts to stifle City Hall. The mayor’s remarks were made during a press conference at his office on Friday.

Mayor Narine said that during his five-year tenure, he managed to make numerous positive changes. He mentioned the ongoing refurbishment of the City Hall building, the renovation of the constabulary, the Dorothy Bailey Health Centre, and Administration buildings. He noted that his efforts reduced or eliminated much of the city’s debts and liabilities. He said that “When I took office, the staff at City Hall routinely protested for payment of their salaries, but now, they no longer have to do that; they always get paid on time.”

He pointed out that many infrastructural improvements were achieved on his watch. In particular, he pointed out that the beautiful walkways along Lamaha Street were not the PPP’s idea; they were in fact, based on proposals made by the city council.

The mayor said that he hopes that the incoming Council will continue to build on the foundation that his outgoing Council has laid.

Narine called on the PPP government to work with the new Council to make Georgetown a “shiny, clean, and beautiful city.” He also called on the incoming Mayor and City Council to cooperate with each other to improve and build a better Georgetown.
