Georgetown, Guyana – In a recent Facebook Live video, former Minister Simona Broomes voiced her support for local government empowerment and urged young people to hold their elected officials accountable. Broomes, known for her passionate advocacy for community development, emphasized the importance of local democracy and the role of the people in shaping their communities.

Broomes began by expressing her belief that Solomon Sharma, a local politician, would serve Region 10 well. She then addressed the young people directly, cautioning them about individuals with hidden agendas who may try to manipulate their minds. She urged them to focus on the actions and achievements of politicians rather than their promises.

“Look at what they have done, not what he talks about what they will do,” Broomes said, emphasizing the importance of holding elected officials accountable.  “Local government is very, very important. It should be about the people,” Broomes asserted, acknowledging the skepticism surrounding the concept but reaffirming its significance.

The former minister recounted her refusal to campaign in Bartica during the coalition government’s local government election run. She commended the courage of the individuals who formed a group to fight for local governance, highlighting the need for community-led initiatives.

Broomes expressed her firm belief that the government should not control all aspects of governance, but instead, power should be decentralized, allowing communities to hold their elected officials accountable.

“You should vote for yourself and for your community. Examine the candidates and hold them accountable,” she urged the young people.

Broomes also touched on the issue of the government using monetary incentives to sway young voters. She criticized the practice, stating that it undermined the dignity and respect that young people deserved.  “I don’t believe you deserve that. I think you deserve to be respected,” Broomes emphasized, pointing out that housing and education were fundamental entitlements that should not be used as campaign tools. She further highlighted the need for equality in education and voiced her support for affordable housing for all citizens.

Broomes concluded her passionate speech by encouraging young people to be vigilant, hold politicians accountable, and actively participate in the democratic process.  “Don’t be fooled. Broomes cautioned.  The former minister’s call for local government empowerment and her emphasis on holding elected officials accountable resonated with many viewers, sparking discussions about the importance of community engagement and grassroots democracy.
