The increase in the Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) within St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Region Four (Demerara – Mahaica) has forced authorities to restrict movement there to mitigate the spread of deadly disease, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony disclosed Wednesday.

Dr. Anthony, during his daily, COVID-19 update said that there were 145 COVID-19 cases, in the community of about 1500 persons.
He disclosed that additional measures have been put in place to ensure that the residents of the Indigenous community are protected.

“We’ve added another doctor and that person would have been there from yesterday. We continue to monitor residents, continue to do testing as well. Yesterday we took off an additional set of swabs, and as of today we now have about 145 cases of COVID-19 in St Cuthbert’s Mission,” he said.

The restriction of movement is being enforced by the Police and representatives of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) with support from the Village Council and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.

The Minister of Health said he expects that more positive diagnoses would be recorded as more tests are done in the community.
Guyana recorded 88 new cases of the virus on Wednesday taking the total number of recorded cases to 4618 with Region Four recording 2213 cases, the highest number of cases across the country.
