Guyana’s parliamentary opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), and the Supreme Court of Judicature – Guyana have both extended congratulations to former acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Yonette Cummings-Edwards, on her appointment as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Cummings-Edwards’ appointment is set to take effect from May 1.
APNU, which holds 12 seats in the National Assembly, said the elevation reflects her longstanding commitment to the rule of law and public service.
In a statement, the opposition described her appointment as recognition of a distinguished legal career marked by leadership, integrity and professionalism.
“Her elevation to this high office is a testament to a lifetime of unwavering dedication to the rule of law, judicial integrity, and public service. Throughout her tenure as Chancellor of the Judiciary in Guyana, she demonstrated exceptional leadership, sound judgment, and an unyielding commitment to justice.”
During her tenure as Acting Chancellor between 2017 and 2025, Cummings-Edwards led Guyana’s judiciary through a period of institutional strengthening, overseeing initiatives aimed at modernising the court system, including efforts to digitise operations, improve case management, and expand access to justice, particularly for hinterland and underserved communities. Her leadership also focused on enhancing judicial training and promoting more efficient delivery of justice across the court system.
The partnership noted that her reputation for fairness and competence extends beyond Guyana, earning respect across the Caribbean and internationally.
APNU also said the appointment represents a source of national and regional pride.
“This appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a moment of pride for Guyana and the wider Caribbean. It stands as clear recognition that excellence, integrity, and resilience will always rise above adversity.”
The opposition further referenced criticisms previously directed at the jurist, maintaining that her record remains intact.
“Despite attempts in some quarters to cast aspersions on her unblemished record, her legacy remains untarnished, defined instead by her remarkable contributions and enduring impact on the legal fraternity.”
According to APNU, Justice Cummings-Edwards’ career should serve as an example for aspiring legal professionals.
“Justice Cummings-Edwards’ success must be celebrated as an inspiration to all, particularly young legal minds who look to her journey as proof of what is possible through diligence and principle.”
The party concluded its statement with a message of support.
“Congratulations, Justice Cummings-Edwards. Guyana will forever remain proud of you and your continued success. May you continue to serve with the same distinction and excellence in this new and esteemed role.”
Meanwhile, the Judiciary also publicly acknowledged her appointment in a social media post.
“The Judiciary extends congratulations to The Hon. Mme. Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, OR, CCH, on her appointment as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and wishes her every success in this important role.”
