The Camp was hosted under the theme: ‘Enjoy, protect and manage our natural environment’. As part of the VYC’s STEM Afterschool Program, 130 students and teachers were invited from among 13 high schools in regions 3 & 4. Students were engaged during the morning session with Foresters from the Guyana Forestry Commission who led them on a nature walk along the Yarrowkabra trail.

Students were immersed in learning to identify trees by names and to understand their usage. While, during the afternoon session, students were engaged in competitive activities such as scavenger hunt using clues to navigate through the trees and also the constructing of a 3-5 feet dome using paper to form equilateral triangles.

Since 2012, the Volunteer Youth Corps Inc has been implementing the Afterschool programme under the funding of ExxonMobil and through endorsement of the Ministry of Education. The programme is currently implemented in 18 high schools in regions 3&4 and targets students from Grades 7 to 11 to improve their academic learning through after school lessons with their subject teachers.

Students while benefiting from daily Afterschool lessons also participate in annual events such as STEM Camps, Conferences, Award and Prize Giving Ceremonies and Robotics Training and Competitions.

Volunteer Youth Corps Inc. (VYC) is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation dedicated for the past 25 years to improving the lives of children and youth through access to quality education and social services in Guyana.
