Protestors told this publication that they are taking this action because land to the south of the road is being used as a burial ground. The residents live on the northern side of the road.

One female protester said, “We decided to block the road because that is the only way to get attention.”

Pointing to the tombs at the site she said, “Look, this area is not a cemetery; this is a dumpsite. They are burying people in garbage. Furthermore, everytime there is a funeral this narrow road is blocked with vehicles. And to make matters worse, the people attending the funeral would urinate all over the place, even in our yards.”

The protestors said that they have sent a petition to the mayor, but, so far, no action has been taken.

This publication spoke with Georgetown’s Mayor Pt. Ubraj Narine. The Mayor said that he is well aware of the problem and he shares the concerns of the people. His Worship said, “Yes, I have received the petition. I have forwarded it to the Town Clerk along with a letter urging her to act. Those documents were sent on February 1. But she has not responded to me.” The Mayor assured that he will continue to follow up the matter with the Town Clerk.
