Police are investigating a fatal accident at around 22:25 hrs last night (Tuesday, February 28) on #79 Public Road, Corriverton, Berbice, where a motorcyclist and pillion rider both succumbed to their injuries.
The accident involved a motor car, # HC 7188, driven by a resident of # 79 Village, Corentyne, with a 39-year-old passenger of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice. The motorcycle (registration number unknown) was owned and driven at the time by Devindra Sampal Lakhraj (now deceased), a 30-year-old of Lot 82 Rahaman Street Corriverton, Berbice, with pillion rider Ronny Persaud (deceased), age 24 years, of Lot 53 Race Course Springlands, Corriverton, Berbice.
Initial investigation revealed that motor car # HC 7188 was proceeding south along the eastern lane with the passenger seated on the left front seat. The motorcycle was proceeding north along the western side at a fast speed and collided with the front portion of the motorcar in the eastern drive lane.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist and the pillion rider received injuries on their head and bodies. Neither of the two was wearing a safety helmet.
The driver and passenger of the motor car, along with the motorcyclist and pillion rider, were picked up and taken to Skeldon Public Hospital, where they were all examined by a doctor on duty. The motorcyclist and the pillion rider were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies are at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
The motor car passenger was treated and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit, suffering from head injuries.
The driver of the motor car is in custody. (GPF)
