Three persons perished when a fire destroyed an apartment building at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara Saturday night.
Dead are members of a family: 46-year-old, Martin Lewis; his 40-year-old wife, Beverly Miller and their 14-year-old son, Dawall Ifill. From all reports the family appeared to have been trapped in the building during the blaze. The building is heavily grilled.
Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle is quoted as telling the Guyana Chronicle that the fire ervice responded to reports of the fire in Sixth Street Cummings, around 17:30hrs. “Units from Campbellville and Alberttown responded and they found that a massive fire was in progress in an apartment building…they immediately went into fire-fighting action, but subsequently learnt that three persons could not be accounted for,” said Gentle in an invited comment.
There were media reports that the bodies were found hugging each other. Police have since arrested one man who is alleged to have made threats to the family.
