| Residents of Kaikan and surrounding communities affected by the recent flood in Region Seven received some 100 food hampers from the government on Saturday. According to the government’s report the relief includes 550 packages of cleaning supplies which will help the community with sanitisation. The hampers were handed over to Toshao Marlon Williams and Deputy Toshao Katiuska Anthon by Minister of Housing and Water, Mr. Collin Croal. Heavy rainfall which caused the overtopping of the Cuyuni River is blamed for the flooding. The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is said to be in the community conducting a flood assessment. Guyana flood management has been reactionary rather than proactive. Desilting of rivers, insufficient and ineffective water defence, and poor drainage and irrigation continue to wreak emotional and financial havoc in the lives of residents and their communities during heavy rainfalls and high tide. One source said “ it is disgusting and painful to have to suffer like this, and when the government turns up with little hampers they expect outpourings of gratitude.” It is unfair to the residents, the source said, asking who will help the people replace what they have lost? |
