| (Loop News)- Port of Spain-based businessman Derek Chin says Guyana needs to start looking at making the country as attractive as possible to get people to help with its development.
In an interview with Loop News, Chin said Guyana needs to ‘attract the brains and people who have migrated’ and may also have to look at attracting ‘industries type’ immigrants as he believes a country needs immigrants.
He said changing up the composition of one’s population can lead to bringing in people who could work and want to work, noting the Filipinos.
Weighing in on the pace of development in Guyana, Chin said Guyana is doing some right things in trying to open up the economy such as with agro-processing, the energy sector, entertainment and investments in restaurants.
He said the success of these sectors is dependent on the number of people they are able to attract.
Noting Guyana has a big Venezuelan community, he believes Guyana can make them feel more welcomed by making it easier for them to get jobs to help build the country.
Chin said Guyana’s biggest problem is that it needs talent as there are only so many people available to fill certain jobs.
He understands that one of the other challenges Guyana has is in the area of housing and infrastructure, as he was told more places are needed to live. Guyana is about 40 times the size of Trinidad.
Chin added that more emphasis needs to be placed on the training and educating of Guyana’s young people. |
