U.S citizen/resident travel advisory for Guyana remains at level 3

The United States (U.S) continues to advise travellers to reconsider travelling to Guyana. Guyana is ranked at a Level Three, which is considered High. At Level Three Americans desirous of travelling to Guyana are to reconsider their decision due to high crime and COVID-19 infections. The Fourth, and highest level, is a “Don’t Travel.” The Embassy, which updated its Travel Advisory page on June 6, still sees Level Three in effect.

Guyana is presently seen as a place of violent crime, including murder and armed robbery, which the U.S sees as common, especially at night. Intended travellers are further advised that the Guyana Police Force often lacks the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. The pandemic is also flagged and those travelling are encouraged to adhere to the following precautions: –

ü  Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.

ü  Be aware of their surroundings.

ü  Avoid walking or driving at night.

ü  Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.

ü  Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.

ü  Enroll in Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

ü  Follow the U.S Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.

ü  Review the Guyana’s Security Report

ü  Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.

ü  Read the Embassy and Department of State COVID-19 pages for information on the pandemic in Guyana.
