Police in West Berbice are investigating the circumstances in which a 28 year old year man lost his life while swimming in a canal aback of the village yesterday afternoon.
The dead man has been identified as Ramesh Ramphal a construction worker of 142 Brittannia Village West Coast Berbice.
Reports stated that Ramphal who was in the company of a female plunged into the canal and encountered difficulties in coming out.
According to reports, after she observed that he was encountering difficulties while in the canal, the female alerted villagers who rushed to the scene to extricate him but by the time they got him out he had lost consciousness.
He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body is being held in a local mortuary pending a post mortem
Ramphal’s brother Joel told Village Voice that his brother would usually swim in the canal after work but he could not say what had transpired yesterday afternoon that may have led to his death there.
The female who was in a relationship with the deceased man was up to late last night assisting the Police in their investigations in the circumstances leading to his death.
