Today we celebrate the birth anniversary of the holy prophet Mohammed upon whom be peace. This day is celebrated as a holiday in Guyana since Independence.

The life and stewardship of prophet Mohammed has made and continues to make a tremendous impact on people in every corner of the globe. For us in Guyana his advocacy, for peace, love and humanity remains like magnificent steps on the sands of time for us to follow. These steps on the road to goodness and glory require that all believers follow his teachings not only on holy days but every day, of every week, of every year. I say this, that notwithstanding, the many religions practiced in our country happily, they all point to the universal practice of goodness. Today Guyana requires our leaders and those they lead to follow faithfully those principles without which as we have seen in many parts of the world, an increase in pain, discord, and a disconnect with true holiness.
