Voices GY, a local non-profit organization providing support to migrants and their host communities in Guyana, has been awarded over GYD $5 million or US$24,897 by the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown to enable its efforts to assist vulnerable migrant groups and returning Guyanese in Regions 3 and 4.

This was announced by the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday. According to the Embassy, the awarding of the sum is part of its mission to build Guyanese social service delivery and support vulnerable populations.

The funding comes under the aegis of the Julia Taft Refugee Fund, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, to fill gaps in assistance for refugee and migrant protection.

Under the grant, Voices GY will organize a 12-week course to teach communications and community organizing skills, and provide information on available social services, legal protections, access to housing, medical assistance, and education.

The program will also produce a migration-focused guide for civil society organizations and government officials to help inform participative decision making. The program aims to build bridges between migrant populations and the local communities, for the benefit of all who live in Guyana
