…driver was unlicensed

A 16-year-old from Corentyne, Berbice died on Monday after an unlicensed 18-year-old who was transporting him by motorcycle crashed into a cow along Crab Wood Creek Public Road two days prior.

Dead is Mahindra Persaud who was the pillion rider of motorcycle #CJ1342 owned and driven by 18-year-old Akthor Nahor of lot 173 Jumai Street and who does not possess a driver’s licence. The incident was reported to the Springlands Police Station by Praddre Persaud, the father of the deceased.

Inquiries disclosed that on Saturday last, the motorcycle was proceeding north along the western drive lane of Crab Wood Creek Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice at a fast rate when, as alleged by the driver, a cow ran from west to east into his path about 15 feet ahead of him.

The front portion of his motorcycle collided with the right side front shoulder of the cow. As a result, both the driver and pillion rider fell onto the road surface where they received injuries to their bodies. This occurred at 21:00 hours.

They were picked up in a conscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where they were attended to and sent away.

However, on Monday, about 07:00hrs the pillion rider was taken back to the Skeldon Public Hospital in an unconscious condition by relatives where he was again seen, treated and referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further treatment.

He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted as a patient in the Intensive Care Unit and was later pronounced dead by a doctor on the said date about 21:00hrs. The body is presently lying at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting post mortem examination. Meanwhile, a notice of intended prosecution has been served as further inquiries are in progress.
