Since the coming to being of this newspaper, there have been much speculations as to who we are and whose we are. Unfortunately, this has become the state of our media landscape here over time, with media houses being branded one way or the other.
Village Voice News however, is part of a larger initiative aimed at democratising the media landscape by offering an alternative perspective that is grounded in the independence ideal of a united, Guyana that privileges diversity and equity.
Towards this end, this newspaper strives for an independent praxis that is free from the clutches of partisan and special-interest influence and control. Village Voice News, therefore, grounds itself in the universal principle of free speech but recognises the need to balance that principle with social order and socio-economic inclusion.
Since our establishment, we have recognised the right of the citizenry to be informed in a manner that leads to responsible social and political behavior. This we believe is another cornerstone of this newspaper’s mission since we believe that an informed citizenry is a vital ingredient in a democratic society. Village Voice News will also strive to use its pages to agitate and advocate for the furtherance of foundational national and regional aspirations such as Ethnic Security, Gender Equity, Social Upliftment, Territorial Integrity and Regional Integration. In the last analysis, Village Voice News represents progressive development that is shaped by national self-determination.
Mindful of the new economic dispensation resulting from the country’s transition to an Oil and Gas economy, Village Voice News strives to be an advocate for a more equal distribution of revenue between Guyana and the oil companies. But equally, the newspaper is an advocate for the equitable distribution of revenues among the various social and ethnic groups in Guyana. In that regard, Village Voice News aims to be a medium of “Oil-Optimism” rather than “Oil-Pessimism.”
Finally, Village Voice News offers itself as the voice and face of every Guyanese-some of whom have not been able to access media and command their rightful place in the public space. We intend to transmit a new brand of news that avoids sensationalism and prejudice and brings to the fore the hidden narratives of the masses of people in their villages, towns and settlements.
