…as 700 COVID cases recorded in June
As the number of COVID-19 cases rise alarmingly in the Rupununi, Republic Bank Guyaba Ltd has temporarily closed its Lethem branch.
The bank noted on July 1, 2021 that it was closing the branch indefinitely due to COVID-19 related circumstances. It said that customers may utilise its Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), RepublicOnline or RepublicMobile to conduct routine transactions and encouraged residetns to continue following COVID-19 protocols as prescribed by the Ministry of Health.
On Friday a cook attached to the Lethem Regional Hospital , who lives at St Ignatius died from COVID-19 complications while a day earlier another female from nearby Kumu Village passed away after contracting the deadly disease.
The Rupununi’s COVID-19 tally surged in June , 2021 with almost 700 cases recorded for that month alone. To date , the Rupununi region has recorded 1629 positive COVID-19 cases with multiple deaths.
The village of St Ignatius has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases; more than 48 active cases were reported on July 1, 2021. Nearby Tabatinga has over 35 active cases.
The Ministry of Health will this weekend undertake a vaccination campaign at the Lethem Regional Hospital. Region Nine Chairman, Bryan Allicock has told another section of the media that the sharp rise in cases may be attributed to frequent house parties hosted by residents.
