…Broomes says after answering several charges

Former Minister with responsibility for Youth Affairs, Simona Broomes appeared before the Magistrate’s Court Monday morning, represented by her counsel, Nigel Hughes, facing several  charges.
stemming from an incident that occurred some weeks ago, involving two men that threatened the life of the former minister.

The incident was streamed live on Broomes’ Facebook page, showing her following the men and later proceeding to a confrontation as to why they came to her home with threatening remarks.
Broomes told the Village Voice that the entire public saw what transpired, and instead of the men being held accountable, the situation took a political turn, as she became the accused, and the two men appeared in court as the victims.

She said there were several charges that the police served her, indicating that they were ‘instructed’. The charges include obstructing a person from going in the direction he wanted to go, causing violence to a person, causing bodily harm, using threatening language, among others.

Broomes said she went live to be transparent with the public and also to get the police’s interception. She said that after the incident, she went to the police station, and a Sergeant Singh refused to take her statement.
She went back the following day, only to be confronted with an allegation, and several charges. No contact was made with Broomes, until Friday when the same Sergeant Singh came to her home with a summon to go to court Monday morning.

The former Minister said at the court, the police couldn’t communicate anything on the charges, and they asked the Magistrate for more time to fix their file, and get further advice.

Broomes also told the Village Voice that it is a sad state that the country is in, if the justice system will be politically tainted. In fact, she said there were occasions where tinted cars drove by her home videoing, and instances of robbery at her home. She said Police would come and run the cameras, and never acted on those situations.
“The police said they got instructions from above, and it is a shame on Guyana Police Force to be influenced by persons with a political agenda, and not allow for justice and the true function of the GPF to protect citizens of the country. They are fighting for the side which violated the law. How can I be wrong to go behind someone who threatened my life?” Broomes lamented.

However, she said that she will use this matter to motivate her.
“When people crush you with challenges, use it as a motivator. But I am concerned, what are we saying to our young people? That law abiding citizens who serve their country, the system will try and destroy? These are questions I’m thinking. But this will not break me,” she posited.

The court matter was adjourned to August 31, 2020, giving the prosecutors more time to substantiate their case.
