A new online Driver’s Licence Portal has been launched on the Guyana Digital School platform, allowing prospective drivers to complete their theoretical examinations digitally as part of efforts to modernise the licensing process and strengthen road safety.

The initiative, launched on November 6, brings together the Ministries of Education, Home Affairs and Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The platform is intended to make the theoretical examination process more accessible, efficient and transparent, while reducing opportunities for unfair influence in the assessment of applicants.

Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Zulfikar Ally said the system would use artificial intelligence to assess examination responses and generate scores based on applicants’ answers.

“Your score will be generated based on the correct answers that you’re given, and AI will judge that for you, and it doesn’t discriminate,” Ally explained.

He urged young people to reject the practice of obtaining driver’s licences through improper means, stressing the importance of completing the required examinations and practical assessments legitimately.

Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond said the digital platform would strengthen the integrity of the licensing process by ensuring that applicants are assessed fairly, without personal connections or influence determining the outcome.

“A driver’s license must represent competence, and not simply a completion of a process,” Walrond stated.

She emphasised that proper assessment of drivers was essential to protecting lives and improving safety on the country’s roads.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag said the initiative would also introduce driver education into the school curriculum, with students expected to begin benefiting from the programme in 2027.

Under the new arrangement, applicants will complete the theoretical examination online, while practical assessments will remain part of the licensing process.

Traffic Chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Mahendra Singh also highlighted the importance of integrating road safety education into the school system, saying the approach would help develop more informed, disciplined and responsible road users.

The portal’s launch coincides with National Road Safety Month 2026, being observed under the theme, “Every life matters. Every road user has a responsibility.”

The initiative forms part of the country’s broader digital transformation efforts, with its effectiveness ultimately depending on whether the new system improves the fairness and reliability of driver assessments and contributes to safer behaviour on Guyana’s roads.
