The Alliance For Change (AFC) has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing hope that his renewed mandate will strengthen democratic institutions and deepen ties between Guyana and Brazil.

In a statement, issued today, the opposition party described Lula’s victory as a democratic milestone and an opportunity to advance Brazil’s national development.

“This democratic milestone reflects the will of the Brazilian people and presents an opportunity to advance national development, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote greater prosperity for all Brazilians.”

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court confirmed Lula’s victory in the October 25 presidential runoff. He secured 51.79 per cent of valid votes, defeating conservative challenger Flávio Bolsonaro, who received 48.21 per cent.

The 80-year-old Lula will serve a fourth, non-consecutive presidential term, having previously governed Brazil from 2003 to 2011 before returning to office in January 2023. His narrow victory underscores Brazil’s continuing political divisions.

The AFC said Guyana and Brazil share interests in economic development, security and the advancement of their populations, pointing to opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations.

The two countries’ economic ties have expanded in recent years. Guyana’s Department of Public Information reported in May 2026 that bilateral trade had reached approximately US$1 billion, compared with about US$58 million in 2020, reflecting growth in sectors including energy, mining, infrastructure and construction.

The countries also have shared interests in cross-border infrastructure, transport links and border security.

Guyana and Brazil formally established diplomatic relations on August 26, 1968, under the government of then Prime Minister Forbes Burnham, who recognised the strategic importance of strengthening ties with Guyana’s southern neighbour, particularly amid regional concerns over the country’s territorial integrity. The relationship was advanced through high-level diplomatic engagement, including a visit to Brazil by Attorney General and Minister of State Sir Shridath Ramphal and Deputy Prime Minister Ptolemy Reid in August 1968.

The AFC said it hoped Lula’s new term would promote partnerships based on democratic principles, good governance and mutual respect.

“We wish President Lula da Silva every success in his renewed mandate and trust that his leadership will contribute to a brighter future for Brazil and to stronger relations throughout our region.”

The party did not outline specific proposals for bilateral cooperation but said it looked forward to closer ties between the two South American neighbours.
