A 36-member Guyanese contingent is competing at the 2026 DSB Suriname Invitational Golf Championship, taking place on October 17 and 18 at Golf Club Paramaribo, as local golfers seek to test themselves against regional opposition.
The tournament brings together players from Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and other regional jurisdictions, providing an opportunity for the Guyanese contingent to gain competitive experience and strengthen the country’s presence on the regional golf circuit.
The Guyana Golf Association (GGA) is among the bodies supporting the participation, with the Westside Golf Course contingent led by GGA President Aleem Hussain and vice-presidents Monnaf Arjune and Philip Haynes.
The Westside team includes Lakeram “Panko” Ramsundar, along with Guyanese-American and Guyanese-Canadian golfers Roy Dhori, Anwar Shaffie, Dustin Spivey and Sabi Dhori.
The players are competing in the A Category, where they face a field expected to provide a strong test of their ability.
Hussain said the trip represented more than an opportunity to compete for individual honours, pointing to the relationship between the Guyanese and Surinamese golfing communities.
“Westside Golf Course is proud to represent Guyana once again in Suriname. Our relationship with Golfclub Paramaribo has grown beyond competitive golf, particularly through our junior development initiatives,” Hussain said.
He added that regional exchanges were important for building stronger players and strengthening ties between golfing communities.
Golf Club Paramaribo, established in 1954, is the oldest golf club in Suriname and has played a role in developing the sport in the country.
The two associations have also collaborated on junior golf initiatives, including the Junior and Beginners Drive, Chip & Putt competition, which has brought young golfers from Guyana and Suriname together since 2023.
The invitational therefore provides both a competitive platform for experienced players and an opportunity to deepen regional cooperation and encourage the development of future golfers.
The latest results and final standings will determine how the Guyanese players finish in the two-day championship.
