Alzarri Joseph: A pleasant exception, a decade of pace

When Alzarri Joseph hit 147kph at the U19 World Cup in 2016, eyes quickly turned towards his 6’4’’ frame. West Indies had been desperately searching for a bowler of his profile. Back home, there had been mounting criticism over spin-friendly pitches, a sharp pivot from their pace heritage.

“It’s a good feeling to be in a team with express pacers,” U19 captain Shimron Hetmyer said back then. “I think we had one pacer in the last World Cup, who really went all the way through the tournament. This year, playing with the fastest bowler is a big boost for us.”

That unnamed quick was Ray Jordan, a St Vincent speedster who grabbed the attention but soon fizzled out – the last of his 15 first-class games came in 2020. Jordan wasn’t one of a kind: the region is replete with stories of young quicks fading away.

This makes Joseph a pleasant exception. The India tour marks 10 years since his ODI debut, and no West Indies bowler has taken as many ODI wickets in that time. Only three quicks have taken more in the world.

It could be assumed that Joseph’s success was the fruit of early exposure to the ODI game: when he stepped out on the sluggish surface of Sharjah, opening alongside Jason Holder, he was yet to turn 20.

Most ODI wickets by West Indies seamers before turning 30

Player	Wkts	Ave	SR
Dwayne Bravo	173	30.13	33.50
Alzarri Joseph	142	29.28	31.60
Jason Holder	140	37.23	40.10
Curtly Ambrose	139	20.51	35.60
Mervyn Dillon	122	32.96	43.00

But looking back, Joseph feels it was a mistake.

“Knowing what I know now, if I was to go back 10 years ago, I wouldn’t necessarily have to learn on the job,” Joseph tells Cricbuzz. “When I played my first ODI game for the West Indies, I don’t think I’d played any List A games for my franchise yet.”

His only List A appearance until then had been a shortened 21 overs-per-side game for the Windies U19s, bowling just two overs. His debut for the Leewards Islands would come after his first ODI appearances.

Joseph doesn’t look back at it with regret, but as a senior statesman, he is looking to ensure future quicks can sidestep the mistakes that he made early in his career. His opinion also brings into context West Indies’ tendency to blood players early: Ian Bishop tweeted out a similar concern for spinner Vitel Lawes, who was subjected to tough Indian pitches with little experience at 19.

“Hopefully, these (younger) guys have played a couple of games beforehand and got a bit of experience,” says Joseph. “There’s a lot of experience in the dressing room as well. I don’t want them to make the mistakes I made.”

Seniority doesn’t signify Joseph considers himself a finished product. He is yet to turn 30 and has often declared his desire to be the best fast bowler in the world. Through the last decade, the game hasn’t been an easy space for bowlers, and Joseph has only learned to grow with it.

“Obviously, 10 years ago, the game was at a place where it’s not now. It has evolved tremendously since then, so it’s having to adapt with the times of how the game is equipped.”

Joseph speaks on the side of an ODI series overdosed with bloated totals, on pitches that allow virtually nothing to the bowlers. Coaches from both sides have voiced their concern, with 350+ chases in the last two games. “Very, very, very small margin of error (for bowlers),” conceded Shai Hope after carting 162* in the final ODI.

Joseph managed only one wicket in 27 overs, his worst outing in four bilateral visits to India.

Luck hasn’t been on his side though. In the debilitating heat of Mullanpur, he first tied up Rohit Sharma with four dots before an lbw call was overturned. With the pressure building, Joseph induced a false shot but Hope couldn’t hold on to a chance on the leg-side.

In Joseph’s next over, Ruturaj Gaikwad was dropped again at the boundary by Lawes. Joseph didn’t react immediately, but well into the next over, he was still shaking his head by the ropes. When a third catch was dropped, this time KL Rahul’s, the frustration was more visible as Joseph roared in anger and muttered to himself.

But Joseph has learned to bide his time when situations are stacked up against him.

“It’s about having that patience to understand that you’re playing a game where pitches are flat, the ball’s not doing much, the batters have improved tremendously, the boundaries are small and the bats are good as well. There’s not much in your favour.”

The bias against bowlers brings out a certain tenacity in him. “The (ODI) game just looks like a longer T20 game. It’s a challenge I look forward to,” Joseph insists. “I know that things are going to be in the favour of the batters most times. If I can count the small wins, every one I get…for me, those are important when you get these conditions.”

Joseph might have built patience over time, but his innate aggression also drives his bowling style. His towering frame allows him to induce extra lift across pitches, and he uses the hard lengths to telling effect.

That approach hasn’t changed: in fact, he has taken more ODI wickets with hard lengths and short balls than length balls since 2020, contrary to the conventional ploy of inducing more false shots through good length.

Hard Length: 51

Good Length: 40

He believes it’s a double-edged sword: “Sometimes it can be good, it can be bad. On good wickets, if the ball is bouncing a bit extra, you can get a couple of dot balls in. But also, if a player gets set, that bounce can play into his favour, he can play the bounce and clear the boundary quite easily. It’s about finding ways to counter these challenges.”

The India series is just another knock in what has been a difficult period for Joseph. A lower-back injury – a degeneration of a previously unresolved issue – took away a year of ODIs and Tests. He is yet to return to the T20I format. Since the start of 2025, he has only played 28 out of West Indies’ 78 matches across formats.

“It was quite difficult,” Joseph says. “Thankfully, I had a good team around me to keep me grounded, keep me focused on my rehabilitation. Not trying to rush back too quickly.

“Also, to remind me that when I do get back, I have to make sure I’m managing my body well. Stay on top of my fitness and conditioning.”

As for any fast bowler approaching their 30s, Joseph is now more aware of his limits. “It’s not about picking and choosing (formats or games),” he says. “It’s about understanding where the body is at a particular time. I have to listen to my body as well. If it’s telling me that it’s time to take a break, then I can’t necessarily push it too much.”

Joseph isn’t part of the India T20Is, having last played in the format in July 2025. He continues to make a mark in T20 leagues though, featuring in the PSL and CPL this year. In CPL 2026, he was the joint-highest wicket-taker in Antigua & Barbuda Falcons’ title win, the first time he was representing his country in the league. Nine out of his 16 wickets came via back-of-length or shorter deliveries. It was a welcome sign after a prolonged period away.

Injuries have also kept him out of the IPL for the past two seasons, a disappointment for a bowler who promised so much – Joseph took 6-12 for Mumbai on his IPL debut in 2019, which remains the best return for a bowler in the tournament. His last outing was in 2024, when RCB paid a whopping INR 11.5 Cr for his services. Joseph’s season lasted just three games and one wicket, though he insists the price point did not affect him.

“I don’t really think about the price tag too much,” he says. “I think about what I can contribute to the team in regard to the price tag. Whatever my price tag is, I’m going to go and give that team my 100%.”

As West Indies head into World Cup qualification, Joseph naturally holds a key place in their attack. The ODI format might be in a complex space, but Joseph still swears by it: “It’s a format I have done well in from the start.

“The scores you are seeing are extremely high. For us as bowlers, we have to now step up to the plate and see how much we can bring things back down to a level playing field.”

Just as the likes of Jason Holder and Kemar Roach shepherded him in the first part of his career, Joseph is now guiding Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph, both of whom have emerged as strong multi-format options.

Ten years is a long time in ODI cricket. Even more so in West Indies cricket. The fire from his teens is still intact, but Joseph has found a way to fuse that with consistency. That’s a rare feature in the region, but he intends to build on it, both as a student of the game, and as a guide for the rest.

“Hopefully, they will learn from my mistakes rather than having to make the same mistakes themselves. Obviously, I encourage them to watch and see what part of the game is going on. See what’s working in terms of fast bowling around the world. See what you can learn from different bowlers.”

Joseph, the mentor, speaks for the rookie he once was: “Ask questions, because there’s no shame in asking questions.”
