Guyana’s top Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) student is Bhedesh Persaud, a student of Queen’s College who secured 22 Grade Ones and 1 Grade Two. Persaud has also topped the Caribbean Region as the overall performer and has copped the award of Best Science Student in the Region.
“It was a rigorous journey but I absolutely enjoyed it,” Persaud told reporters on the sidelines of the official announcement of the results, hosted by the Ministry of Education at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD).
He added: “I’m grateful and happy for the results and I’m ecstatic but, of course, my focus is on CAPE right now so, that’s in the past and I’m moving forward.”
Persaud hopes to become a mechanical or aeronautical engineer and hopes to use his knowledge and skills, following after higher studies, to contribute to the betterment of Guyana. “I’m fascinated about science and mathematics — in science, especially physics. I’m also fascinated about making things to solve problems,” he said.
“I would like to give back to my country, my home. I love Guyana and I will give back to Guyana, that’s for certain.”
Persaud forms part of the 362 candidates locally who secured Grade Ones in 8 or more subjects as well as the 50 candidates who secured 12 Grade Ones or more.
The other nine students who worked their way to the country’s top 10 CSEC performers are: Duvina Seurattan from thh Anna Regina Secondary — 19 Ones 2 twos; Swasti Saytoo from the Anna Regina Secondary –18 Ones 3 twos; Geveshwar Rajkishore from the Saraswati Vidya Nikitan– 18 Ones 1 two; Reyah Khemraj from JC Chandisingh Secondary –17 Ones 3 twos; Shivnarine Chaitram from Saraswati Vidya Nikitan — 17 Ones 2 twos; Shivshankar Chaitram from Saraswati Vidya Nikitan — 17 Ones 2 twos; Atishta Seenarine from Saraswati Vidya Nikitan — 17 Ones 2 twos; Chaitra Singh from Saraswati Vidya Nikitan– 16 Ones 3 twos; and Tabitha Alves from Abrams’ Zuil Secondary — 16 Ones 4 twos.
Guyana is set to be the recipient of four of the six top awards administered by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) for CSEC students. Best Student of Overall Performance will go to Persaud; Best Student in Technical Vocation will go to Anthony Sookram from the New Amsterdam Secondary; Best Business Student which will go to Niron Soekanandan of St. Rose’s High; and the Top Science Student which will go to Persaud.
