U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday as the wars in Iran and Ukraine dominated the international agenda and governments confronted mounting tensions over security, energy and global diplomacy.
Trump arrived at the UN amid a Middle East conflict that has continued for nearly seven months and a war in Ukraine that has entered its fifth year without a comprehensive settlement. Reuters reported that Trump was scheduled to meet numerous world leaders during a day of bilateral and group meetings.
Iran War at Centre of Address
In his address, Trump defended the U.S. war with Iran, arguing that American military action had prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
He also warned that the United States could “annihilate” Iran if an agreement to end the conflict is not reached.
Trump has continued to argue that military pressure is necessary to force Iran toward a settlement, while the conflict has generated broader concerns over regional stability and energy supplies.
His remarks came as world leaders gathered for the annual UN meeting against a backdrop of multiple conflicts and disputes.
Ukraine Remains on Agenda
The war in Ukraine was another major issue surrounding Trump’s UN appearance.
Reuters reported that Trump was scheduled to meet leaders from Ukraine and other countries as part of a diplomatic schedule involving more than 11 world leaders. The war has continued despite repeated diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement.
The UN gathering also comes as governments confront issues extending beyond war, including climate change, inequality, migration and artificial intelligence.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres used his address to call for greater international cooperation, while world leaders confronted what the Associated Press described as a broad menu of global challenges.
Trump’s appearance places the United States at the centre of several of those debates, particularly over the use of military force and the future of international diplomacy.
The response from other governments and UN members to his remarks will be closely watched as the General Assembly continues its high-level session.
