Police seized 78 pounds of suspected cannabis and more than $455,000 in cash during an operation at Five Mile, Ituni Road, on the night of Wednesday, September 9.

According to police, the operation began at about 8:30 p.m. after ranks received information and observed two motorcycles travelling along the roadway without registration plates.

One motorcycle was carrying several bulky parcels.

Police pursued the motorcycles. During the chase, the rider carrying the parcels fell from his motorcycle and was arrested, while the other rider escaped.

The parcels were examined and police said they contained leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The suspected narcotics weighed 35.4 kilograms, equivalent to approximately 78 pounds.

Police also found $455,180 in cash.

The arrested man, a 40-year-old resident of Siberia Mines, was taken to Mackenzie Police Station.

The suspected cannabis, cash and motorcycle were also taken into police custody.

Investigators are now expected to determine the intended destination of the suspected narcotics and the source and purpose of the large quantity of cash.

Police have not disclosed whether the arrested man has been charged.

The second motorcyclist remains at large.

The seizure comes amid continuing police efforts to disrupt the movement of illegal drugs through Guyana.

The quantity of suspected cannabis and cash involved is likely to attract particular attention as investigators seek to establish whether the operation was part of a wider trafficking network.

Further charges could follow as the investigation continues.
