Organisations, supporters and party members gathered Thursday at the Mausoleum in the Botanical Gardens to mark the 41st anniversary of the death of Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham (February 20, 1923 – August 6, 1985), as the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) paid tribute to its founder leader through a statement issued to commemorate the occasion.

Burnham, founder leader of the People’s National Congress, remains one of the most influential and polarizing figures in Guyana’s history. In the statement, the PNCR said it joined Guyanese at home and in the diaspora “in solemn remembrance” of a leader it credits with shaping the modern state.

“Forty-one years after his death, the vision, leadership, patriotism, and enduring contributions of Forbes Burnham continue to shape the foundations of the modern Guyanese State,” the party stated.

The commemoration highlighted Burnham’s central role in guiding Guyana to Independence in 1966 and later to Republican status in 1970—milestones the party described as defining moments in the country’s journey to full sovereignty.

“His life’s work was dedicated to the pursuit of national unity, social justice, economic independence, and the empowerment of every Guyanese regardless of race, class, or creed.”

Central to that legacy, the PNCR pointed to Burnham’s introduction of free education from nursery to university, describing it as a transformative policy that expanded access and opportunity across generations.

“President Burnham firmly believed that education was the pathway to national development… opening the doors of opportunity to generations of Guyanese who otherwise could not have afforded it.”

The statement also underscored investments in healthcare, housing, and infrastructure, alongside efforts to build a self-reliant economy through state enterprises and local industry—policies that supporters argue laid the groundwork for national development.

At the same time, the party acknowledged that Burnham’s tenure continues to invite scrutiny.

“The PNCR acknowledges that history invites both praise and criticism of all national leaders. However, no honest assessment of Guyana’s development can ignore the immense contributions made by Forbes Burnham…”

Internationally, Burnham’s role as a founding architect of CARICOM and his advocacy within the Non-Aligned Movement were cited as evidence of his influence beyond Guyana’s borders, along with his support for anti-colonial and anti-apartheid struggles.

The ceremony also revisited his national vision—captured in the motto “One People, One Nation, One Destiny”—and his early emphasis on environmental stewardship, including recognition of Guyana’s forests as a national asset.

Thursday’s observance at the Mausoleum served as both tribute and reflection, reinforcing Burnham’s enduring imprint on Guyana’s political identity even as the country navigates new economic realities and governance challenges.

Closing its statement, the PNCR called on Guyanese, particularly younger generations, to study Burnham’s life and draw inspiration from his commitment to national service.

“The greatest tribute we can pay to Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham is to continue working towards a Guyana founded on unity, democracy, justice, equal opportunity, and sustainable national development.”

Four decades after his death, Burnham’s legacy remains deeply embedded in the nation’s story—contested, influential, and impossible to ignore.

“May his legacy continue to inspire generations yet unborn. Lest We Forget.”
