The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc., in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Oxford Medical Centre, recently conducted a cancer screening and diagnostic outreach at the Enmore Regional Hospital, bringing essential preventive and specialist services closer to communities while supporting Guyana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cancer prevention and early detection.
A total of 40 individuals benefited from the outreach, which offered a range of screening, diagnostic, and educational services. Women received cervical cancer screening through Pap smears and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing, while those with abnormal screening results were provided with specialist diagnostic services, including colposcopy examinations and biopsies where clinically indicated. Clinical breast examinations, breast health education, and referrals for mammography were also provided to women who met the screening criteria. Men accessed prostate cancer screening services and education.
The initiative forms part of The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc.’s continued commitment to supporting national efforts to reduce the burden of Guyana’s most common cancers through increased public awareness, routine screening, early diagnosis, patient education, and timely referrals for treatment. Early detection remains one of the most effective strategies for improving treatment outcomes and reducing cancer-related illness and deaths.
One of the most significant outcomes of the outreach was that several women with previously abnormal cervical cancer screening results were able to receive timely follow-up diagnostic services, including colposcopy and biopsy. This underscores the importance of community-based outreach programmes in improving access to specialist care and ensuring continuity of treatment for patients.
Founder and Chairperson of The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc., Dr. Shivani Samlall, emphasized that cancer prevention extends beyond screening alone.
“Every abnormal screening result represents an opportunity to prevent cancer, and every patient deserves the chance to access the next step in their care. Through collaboration with the Ministry of Health and our community partners, we are helping to strengthen the continuum of care by bringing services closer to communities and supporting patients throughout their healthcare journey,” Dr. Samlall said.
In addition to screening and diagnostic services, participants received education on HPV infection, cervical cancer prevention, breast health, prostate health, and the importance of routine health checks. These educational sessions empower individuals with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their health and encourage greater participation in preventive healthcare.
The outreach reflects Guyana’s continued progress in expanding access to cervical, breast, and prostate cancer screening services across the country. Ongoing collaboration among healthcare providers, regional health authorities, community organizations, and development partners remains critical to advancing cancer prevention efforts and improving health outcomes nationwide.
