Thousands of vulnerable Guyanese are set to benefit from a new social housing programme that will provide homes for those facing the greatest economic and social challenges.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced on Thursday that the initiative will form a key pillar of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Administration’s housing agenda over the next five years.

The programme will prioritise single mothers experiencing financial hardship, persons living with disabilities, and elderly citizens who require additional support to achieve homeownership.

“We’re going to build a mechanism through which we’re going to identify highly vulnerable persons within our society… and we’re going to have a social housing programme to support home ownership,” the president said.

The government is targeting the construction of between 3,000 and 5,000 social homes under the initiative.

President Ali explained that strict eligibility criteria will be established to ensure assistance reaches those most in need.

He said the programme reflects the government’s broader vision of ensuring that every Guyanese family has access not only to land but also to safe, dignified housing.

“We want to not only to make home ownership easier, but to empower people, to bring dignity to every single Guyanese family in where they live, how they live and the circumstances surrounding their living condition,” he stated.

The social housing initiative will complement the administration’s commitment to construct 40,000 housing units during its current term while expanding opportunities for affordable homeownership across the country.
