Guyana on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with the United States as the North American nation celebrated the 250th anniversary of its independence.
Speaking at the United States’ 250th Independence Anniversary celebration in Georgetown, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the relationship between the two countries has grown stronger over the years and is anchored in shared democratic values, international cooperation and mutual respect.
The United States commemorated 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when representatives of the 13 American colonies declared independence from Great Britain following years of political tensions and armed conflict that culminated in the American Revolutionary War.
Guyana and the United States established diplomatic relations on May 26, 1966—the day Guyana gained independence from Britain—with the opening of the US Embassy in Georgetown. Since then, the relationship has expanded significantly to encompass trade, investment, security, healthcare, education, energy and economic development.
Addressing government officials, diplomats and invited guests, President Ali described the Guyana-US partnership as one built on enduring principles rather than convenience.
He also commended US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot and the diplomatic teams of both countries for helping to strengthen bilateral ties through sustained engagement and cooperation.
The President pointed to expanding cooperation in the health sector as one example of the growing partnership, highlighting collaborations with US medical institutions, including Northwell Health and Mount Sinai Health System.
Ali also underscored the shared responsibility of Guyana and the United States to strengthen regional security, protect future generations and promote sustainable economic growth.
He welcomed continued American investment through both government and private sector partnerships, saying the two countries remain committed to building on a relationship focused on peace, security and shared prosperity.
The United States remains one of Guyana’s closest strategic partners, with bilateral cooperation deepening in recent years amid Guyana’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing oil-producing nations and increased collaboration on regional security, democratic governance, trade and investment.
