Opposition Rights Under Siege as PPP/C Expands Control — WPA

The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) has issued a statement expressing serious concerns over what it describes as alarming governance overreach by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) following the recent elections. The WPA asserts that the actions of the PPP/C not only undermine the opposition’s rights but also pose a significant threat to the very foundations of democracy in our nation.

The WPA’s observations illustrate a troubling trend whereby the ruling party is perceived to be encroaching upon the democratic rights and freedoms that should be afforded to all political factions. They have pointed to a series of government actions that they believe infringe upon the rights of the opposition within the elected Parliament, specifically highlighting a slow dismantling of the established protocols that should govern legislative processes. The question of legitimacy looms large, particularly as the WPA references the dubious nature under which the PPP/C claims its electoral victory. Election observers have reported multiple failures within the electoral framework, indicating a system that increasingly favours one party while stifling legitimate opposition.

Government overreach can be defined as instances where state authorities exceed the boundaries of their legal or constitutional powers, often encroaching on personal liberties and local jurisdiction. Such overreach is inherently a violation of the social contract that exists between the government and the governed, undermining the fundamental principle that a government’s role is to protect rather than infringe upon the rights of its citizens. This issue is particularly pertinent in our own country, where the implications of such overreach can be felt throughout society, especially by those who dare to oppose the ruling party.

In recent months, the PPP/C has been accused of manipulating the political arena to establish control over key state institutions, including the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). Observers have noted a manipulation of the electoral framework that not only skews outcomes in favour of the ruling party but effectively criminalises dissent through bureaucratic hurdles. The consequences of these actions extend beyond immediate political gain; they threaten the long-term viability of democratic governance in our nation.

Furthermore, the WPA has intimated that the PPP/C’s control over the country’s vast oil revenues has exacerbated inequality in political campaigning, providing them with unprecedented advantages. This has led to an environment in which state resources are utilised to bolster the ruling party’s agenda while silencing opposition voices that struggle to gain access to similar funds and media platforms. The dissection of our country’s democracy is alarming, as laws intended to ensure fair play are cast aside, allowing the executive to operate outside the purview of the legislative and judicial branches.

As a call for accountability, the WPA’s statement underscores the necessity for vigilance against the rise of autocratic governance. The party insists that the relentless pursuit of power by the PPP/C must be met with an equally robust response to defend the principles of democracy and rule of law that foundationally bind our society.
