Guyana’s rising track and field stars delivered a standout performance at the South American Youth Games, securing gold and silver in the boys’ 100 metres while advancing multiple athletes to the 400m finals, signaling a strong showing on the regional stage.
The Games, being held from April 19 to April 25 in Panama City, bring together the region’s top young athletes in a key developmental competition.
According to the Guyana Olympic Association, sprinters Ezekiel Millington and Gordon Thompson powered to an emphatic one-two finish in the 100m final. Millington captured gold in 10.50 seconds, with Thompson following for silver in 10.64 seconds, capping dominant performances from both athletes throughout the rounds.
The result marks one of Guyana’s most impressive sprint achievements at the youth level in recent years, reinforcing the country’s growing strength in short-distance events.
Momentum continued in the 400 metres, where Ade Sealy secured a place in the boys’ final after finishing second in his semifinal heat with a time of 49.07 seconds. His measured run ensured qualification while preserving energy for the decisive race.
Akeela Dover also advanced to the 400m final, giving Guyana representation in both male and female quarter-mile events and strengthening its medal prospects as the competition progresses.
The South American Youth Games serve as a critical pathway for emerging athletes, often acting as a springboard to higher-level regional and international competition, including the Pan American Games and beyond.
The performances in Panama signal a clear shift—Guyana’s young athletes are no longer emerging prospects, but serious contenders converting talent into results on the regional stage.
