By Mark DaCosta- In a progressive stride towards enhancing healthcare services, Optique Vision Care (OVC) unveiled its state-of-the-art Optique Eye Hospital (OEH) on Friday, April 17, 2026, in New Market Street, Georgetown. With a significant investment of US$5 million, this new facility embodies a major leap in the provision of specialised eye care, offering numerous medical and surgical options and advanced technology that will undoubtedly transform patient outcomes.

At its grand opening, adorned with the presence of healthcare executives and government officials, Chief Executive Officer Dhani Narine articulated a bold vision for the country’s healthcare landscape. He underscored the importance of developing local capabilities to conduct complex ophthalmic (eye) procedures at international standards, thereby ensuring that no individual, regardless of age, need seek treatment abroad for sight-saving interventions.

Narine’s remarks highlighted the invaluable partnerships that have inspired and facilitated this groundbreaking initiative, ultimately revealing a commitment to uplift the healthcare offerings available to our citizens.

Dr. Shailendra Sugrim, a leading figure in local ophthalmology, has dedicated years to advancing eye health in our country. Currently at the helm of the Ophthalmology Department at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Dr. Sugrim has been instrumental in modernising eye care and enhancing outreach initiatives, particularly in addressing conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. His extensive education includes an MBBS from the University of Guyana, specialised ophthalmology training, and a glaucoma fellowship.

As a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the new facility, he also plays a critical role in training nurses and general practitioners, thus addressing the shortage of eye care specialists within our healthcare system. His dedication to improving eye health is reflected not only in clinical settings but through proactive community health initiatives aimed at preventing visual impairments among the youth.

The OEH is set to provide a comprehensive range of surgical services, including cataract and glaucoma surgery, addressing diverse ophthalmic conditions with a patient-centred approach. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology and operating theatres designed to elevate the standard of care available.

Through continuous training and development programmes for its staff, the hospital aims to ensure that the quality of services is consistently maintained and improved. Additionally, the OEH is committed to enhancing public awareness about vision health by implementing screening campaigns and educational outreach, reinforcing the importance of early detection in preventing serious eye conditions.

Among the health reform announcements made during the inauguration was President Irfaan Ali’s introduction of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) diagnostic tool, capable of analysing X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans in just one minute. This AI initiative, aimed at streamlining the diagnostic process, seeks to significantly reduce the waiting times faced by patients across Guyana.

The system, recently rolled out at select hospitals, will provide rapid analyses, aiding medical practitioners in delivering timely and accurate treatments. With such technological advancements, the aim is to improve patient outcomes and elevate the competence of our healthcare services.

The integration of AI in healthcare represents a transformative approach — one that supports clinicians rather than replaces them. This innovative technology relies on a training procedure known as supervised learning, wherein algorithms are fed extensive datasets of labelled medical information to recognise patterns correlating with specific health conditions.

By employing deep learning techniques, AI is able to provide support that enables healthcare professionals to focus on nuanced patient care, ensuring higher standards in diagnosis and treatment.

However, while these achievements reflect progress, there is a growing need to scrutinise the role of political leadership in realising such initiatives. The current administration’s focus on technological progress must not obscure the underlying challenges in healthcare that persist.

We must demand accountability from our leaders to ensure that these advancements translate into tangible benefits for all citizens, rather than being a mere facade for insufficient governance.

As we look to the future, the advancements brought forth by Optique Eye Hospital and the introduction of AI into our healthcare system herald a new era of medical care in our nation. They offer hope and possibilities that were previously out of reach for many. Nonetheless, the true measure of success will hinge upon the ongoing commitment to improve healthcare accessibility and quality for all citizens, irrespective of their socio-economic status.

Indeed, as we celebrate these strides toward better healthcare, vigilance and advocacy remain essential. We must ensure that every Guyanese reaps the benefits of these advancements, and that our leaders remain dedicated to fostering an environment of health equity, where quality care is accessible in every corner of our nation, to each and every citizen.
