The Caribbean Chapter of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) will host its 10th Annual Educational Symposium for the first time in Georgetown, Guyana, bringing together leading experts in hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HPB) surgery from across the Caribbean and around the world.
The two-day symposium will be held on March 7–8, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Pegasus Hotel. The conference is being convened under the auspices of the Caribbean Chapter of AHPBA, established in 2015 as the only regional body singularly focused on improving outcomes in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
The symposium will bring together specialists from the Caribbean, North America, Europe, India, China, and Australia to discuss advancements in liver, pancreas, and biliary surgery, trauma care, minimally invasive techniques, oncology, and regional collaboration.
The event will officially open with remarks from Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, underscoring the national significance of this milestone medical gathering.
According to Chapter President Shamir Cawich of Belize, the meeting aims to strengthen regional HPB services, establish a Caribbean registry, and foster strategic international partnerships to enhance surgical care delivery throughout the region.
Dr. Sandy Solomon of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Guyana, who will deliver opening remarks and present on hepatocellular carcinoma in pregnancy, noted that hosting the 10th anniversary symposium in Guyana represents a significant step forward for surgical development in the country and highlights Guyana’s growing leadership in complex HPB surgery.
Key sessions during the symposium will cover topics including:
- HPB trauma in the Caribbean
- Pancreatico-duodenal injuries
- Bariatric surgery and liver outcomes
- Advanced liver resections and ICU management
- Minimally invasive pancreatic surgery
- Bile duct injury and surgical mentorship
The symposium will also feature international faculty from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Australia, and multiple Caribbean nations, fostering high-level academic exchange and strengthening regional collaboration.
