Locally farmed Vannamei shrimp from the Onverwagt Prawns Project in Region Five is now available in supermarkets nationwide following a partnership between Massy Stores (Guyana) Inc. and the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Onverwagt project, a government-supported aquaculture initiative, is expected to produce approximately 360 tons of shrimp annually. It forms part of the Ministry’s broader food security strategy aimed at expanding Guyana’s shrimp industry, reducing seafood imports, creating income opportunities, and positioning the country for future export growth.

Assistant Vice-President and General Manager of Massy Stores (Guyana) Inc., Christpen Bobb-Semple, said the collaboration demonstrates how cooperation between the public and private sectors can help translate national development plans into market-ready products. He noted that the initiative supports economic diversification beyond oil, strengthens local value chains, and improves consumer access to locally produced, high-quality food.

The Onverwagt Prawns Project is among a series of agricultural investments spearheaded by President Irfaan Ali to expand aquaculture, modernise agriculture, and build a more resilient food system.

Massy Stores said the launch also reflects its ongoing support for local enterprise development and the Brand Guyana initiative, under which the company provides retail space for locally produced goods and works with the Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate market access for domestic products.
