STEMGuyana has opened registration for a free, one-day online artificial intelligence (AI) workshop exclusively for public school teachers, as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise teaching and learning and prepare Guyanese students for the demands of the 21st century.
The organisation announced that space for the workshop is limited and urged interested teachers to register early. Due to overwhelming demand, STEMGuyana said it will run additional sessions and continues to encourage teachers to sign up. So far, hundreds have already benefited. By the end of the workshop, participants will gain new knowledge including reducing teachers’ preparation time, strengthening lesson plans, and will receive a certificate of completion.
According to STEMGuyana, the session is designed to help educators understand how AI tools can be used to reduce lesson preparation time, strengthen lesson plans and support student learning, without replacing the role of the teacher.
“Guyanese teachers, the classroom is changing and your role matters more than ever,” the organisation stated in its release, noting that the training will be practical and focused on real classrooms, real students and real teaching challenges.
STEMGuyana has, over the past decade, played a key role in advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education across Guyana. Through programmes in robotics, coding, science education and teacher training, the organisation has worked with students and educators in both coastal and hinterland communities, promoting critical thinking, problem-solving and digital skills seen as essential for national development in a rapidly evolving global economy.
The latest initiative comes at a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing education systems worldwide. STEMGuyana says the workshop will equip teachers with a clear understanding of how AI can be responsibly integrated into teaching, serving as a support tool rather than a substitute for professional judgement, creativity and human interaction in the classroom.
Most Guyanese children are educated through the public school system, making public school teachers central to shaping the country’s future workforce and leadership. Education stakeholders have long argued that equipping teachers with modern tools and skills can have a multiplier effect, benefiting thousands of students across the system.
By giving public school teachers free access to AI training, STEMGuyana aims to help educators better engage students, personalise learning and prepare young people to compete and innovate in a technology-driven world. The organisation noted that teachers who take advantage of the opportunity will be better positioned to mould minds capable of playing leading roles in Guyana’s social and economic development.
STEMGuyana emphasised that the workshop is free only for public school teachers and forms part of its broader mission to support educators as frontline drivers of educational transformation in Guyana.
STEMGuyana is led by Executive Director Karen Abrams, a doctoral candidate in education who has been a consistent advocate for integrating innovation, critical thinking and technology into Guyana’s education system.
