He will have a rest day today before finishing the competition on November 11 in the 50M backstroke Heat 2 at 10.23 am
Table tennis
Both teams started the day looking to rebound from losses on the opening day. The womens team was first on the table at 10.00 am against Kyrgyzstan. The team again started the doubles tie with Chelsea Edghill /Jasmine Billingy against Muratalieva Raiana/Kudusova Saida. The Guyana team after dropping the first game 11 – 6 then rebounded with two strong games winning the second game 11 – 7 and then closed out the tie with a commanding 11 – 4 win in the third game. In the second tie Thuraia Thomas was pitted against Alana Ulanbekova however she proved to be too strong for Thuraia as the Guyanese player went down in straight games 11 – 7, 11 – 6, 11- 6. This meant that Guyana was trailing 4 – 2 in games. Next on the table was Guyana’s number 1 player Chelsea Edghill and the team was hoping for her to secure a three nil win to improve the teams chances of qualifying for the quarter finals. Chelsea’s opponent was Saida Kudusova. Chelsea won the first game 11 – 8 and then won the second game 11 – 7 and it seemed as if the three nil win was on the cards however this was not to be as Chelsea lost the third game 11 – 5 which meant that Guyana was trailing 5 – 4 in games. Jasmine Billingy was next on the table against Alana Ulanbekova. Jasmine won the first game 11 – 6 and then after being down 10 – 4 in the second staged a remarkable come back to even the score at ten all and then went on to win the second game 16 – 14. The third game was going neck and neck however jasmine just failed to deliver a three nil win as she succumbed 11- 8 in the third game. The games were now tied at 6 all with Thuraia Thomas next up against Raiana Muratalieva. It was tough going for Thuraia as she lost the first two games 11 – 3, 11 – 3 and thus Guyana lost out on earning a quarter final place by the score of 8 games to 6.
The mens team was on at 1.00 pm in their group C match up against Uganda playing for a spot to advance to the quarter finals with a victory. Guyana changed up their playing order for this tie with number 1 player Shemar Britton set to play in 6 singles games with the hope that the team would have picked up two other games in their other matchups. Elishaba Johnson/Nigel Bryan contesting the opening tie in the doubles against Joshua Magaya/Jonathan Senyonga. The Guyana pair had a disappointing loss losing 12- 10, 11 – 9, 11 – 8 which put the team at a severe disadvantage from the inception. Shemar Britton Guyana’s number 1 was pitted against Ugandan number 1 Joseph Sebatindira. Shemar brought Guyana back into the tie with a clinical display winning in straight games 11 – 7, 11 – 3, 11 – 9. This then brought the scores level at three matches all. Team Guyana was now looking to secure two games from any of the next two ties as Shemar Britton was down to play the fifth and final tie. Elishaba Johnson was next on the table against Jonathan Senyonga. Elishaba won a close first game 11 – 9 but then lost both the second and third games 11 – 9 which meant that Guyana was down 5 games to 4. Nigel Bryan was up next against Joseph Sebatindira with Team Guyana looking for any game out of the three but it was not to be. Nigel led 4 – 0 in the first game but then lost the next four points and lost all momentum. He lost the first game 11 – 8 and then a closer second game 11 – 9. This seemed to take all the fight from Nigel as he lost the third game 11 – 5. This meant that the tie was lost 8 games to 4 without Shemar even getting a chance to play in the fifth tie.
Both the mens and ladies teams have a rest day tomorrow with Chelsea Edghill, Jasmine Billingy, Shemar Britton and Elishaba Johnson set to compete in the singles on November 11. The doubles will be played on November 12.
The athletes are due to arrive on November 14 as the Athletics section commences on November 17.
