Former Mayor of Georgetown and ex-Staff Sergeant of the Guyana Defence Force, Pt. Ubraj Narine, has accused the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government of engaging in political persecution against businessman and political figure Mr. Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nasar “Shell” Mohamed.

In a strongly worded statement, Narine questioned the Government’s actions, describing them as politically motivated and an abuse of state institutions.

“Is this the lowest the PPP Government can go — to plot against their political opponent, Mr. Azruddin Mohamed, and his father? Mr. Mohamed is soon to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament and is likely to assume the position of Leader of the Opposition,” Narine said.

He further alleged that the Guyana Police Force and the courts are being misused for political ends.

“It is deeply concerning to witness the blatant abuse of the Guyana Police Force and the courts to carry out what can only be described as political gimmicks, entirely outside the due process of the laws of Guyana,” he added.

Narine expressed hope that the Government would maintain the same level of accountability if international attention were to turn toward members of the ruling party.

“I sincerely hope that when the day comes and the United States turn their attention to high-ranking members within the PPP, this same Government will be willing to do the same as they done today.”

Emphasising the importance of justice and fairness, Narine offered words of encouragement to Mohamed.

“Due process and fair deliberation are the foundations of justice and the dignity of our great nation. I extend my blessings to Mr. Azruddin Mohamed and wish him strength to fight this battle to the very end.”

Concluding his statement, the former mayor issued a warning to the ruling administration.

“To the PPP regime — there’s an old saying: ‘Be careful what you wish for.’”

Pt. Ubraj Narine signed the statement as “JP, COA, Former Staff Sgt. (GDF), Mayor, City of Georgetown.”
