This troubling event occurred in retaliation to disciplinary measures imposed on them, amplifying the frustrations of educators already grappling with issues of discipline and safety in the classroom.
The gravity of the situation escalated further when reports surfaced of harassment at the teacher’s residence, where she claims to have endured attacks involving squibs and stones, allegedly orchestrated by the same students. This behaviour not only tarnishes the reputation of our educational system but also highlights a broader trend of disrespect towards educators, which has reached epidemic proportions.
Recently, Coretta McDonald, the President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, spoke passionately about the plight of teachers at New Campbellville Secondary, lamenting, “Now, this here has gone past the limit, let me say that.” McDonald pointed to the resurgence of disciplinary issues that echo prior instances of violence and harassment reported two years ago. The concern is palpable, as she noted that the current atmosphere leads students to feel empowered in their defiance, contributing to a culture of impunity.
Artificial intelligence, in its transformative ability, can be manipulated for malicious purposes, as demonstrated in this incident. The technology can enable individuals to create hyper-realistic digital content, which, while often beneficial, can be weaponised to harass or defame others. In this case, the students reportedly used AI to superimpose the teacher’s face onto explicit material, creating a severe breach of trust and safety within the school environment.
McDonald expressed dissatisfaction with the response from authorities, stating, “The police apparently some of them don’t know how to operate; they don’t know what to do.” Her comments underline a critical lack of support for educators who are facing these sorts of attacks. The Ministry of Education has remained silent on the issue, with no public statements from Minister Sonia Parag, further exacerbating the frustration felt among teachers.
Tensions have been simmering at New Campbellville Secondary, which has faced a myriad of challenges, including a shortage of personnel and inadequate facilities. Dismaying conditions such as broken flooring and walls, coupled with pest infestations, have compounded the discontent among staff. McDonald remarked, “Our teachers are prepared to work, but they cannot work when they are uncomfortable,” illustrating the deep-seated issues plaguing this institution.
The recent disturbances have prompted educators to consider protest actions in response to the perceived inaction from the educational authorities. However, plans for a sit-in were halted following intervention from the Ministry of Education’s Welfare Department. While this intervention might suggest action, McDonald cautioned against complacency, insisting that substantive measures are critical to ensure the safety and morale of both teachers and students. “I would be happy if you can come to this school and spend one day… then you will understand how teachers feel,” she challenged Minister Parag.

The pervasive culture of violence and disrespect not only threatens the wellbeing of teachers but also undermines the educational experience of students.
