Dear Editor,
I Have Memories to Last a Lifetime on Farnum Ground
February 2025 marked 55 years the De Florimonte family has lived at 5th Avenue Subryanville. My parents had 9 children, and I am the 3rd from the bottom. Myself and my siblings spent much of our childhood between DYC (Diocesan Youth Centre) on 3rd Avenue, and Farnum Playfield.
I broke my arm at 11 years old on Farnum, trying to climb to the top of the goalpost.
As soon as school closed for the Easter, we would be carrying coconut branches and pieces of wood down the road to Farnum Ground to build a “shelter” for the Easter holidays since we would be spending days just flying our kites there.
I could clearly remember arriving on Easter Monday one year to find a family from Gordon Street Kitty already decked out in our makeshift tent with their blankets and baskets and children.
People came from Kitty and Campbellville for recreation on Farnum Ground. The best spots were always along the 3rd Avenue fence, since you had the width of the entire field to raise your kite. Both my brothers also played football with Kitty Rangers FC on Farnum Ground for many years.
I have these and many more Memories to last a lifetime, and I hope that my grands, great nieces, nephews and children from the surrounding communities can continue to make their own memories on Farnum Playfield.
Yours truly,
Zandra Perreira Née De Florimonte
