The 30-year-old North Road, Bourda woman, who was allegedly caught trying to smuggle cocaine in a box of snacks through the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, has been remanded to prison.
Pathrina Pilgrim, a mother of two of Lot 2 ‘C’ North Road, appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday, and pleaded not guilty to charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Pilgrim was remanded to prison until February 19.
It is alleged that Pilgrim was attempting to traffic approximately 534 grams of cocaine, which was found concealed in a box of local snacks earmarked for Brooklyn, New York.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) made the seizure last Wednesday at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
In a statement, CANU said Pilgrim posted the box, which contained 2 parcels of cocaine totaling 534 grams. However, a CANU officer, intercepted the box before it was loaded on a flight destined for Brooklyn, New York. The suspected cocaine was found in two parcels each wrapped in carbon and concealed in a false wall to the bottom of the said box.
“The box contained a quantity of packets of local snacks, notably: coconut biscuit, mittai, chicken foot and one packet of uncooked vermicelli,” CANU detailed.
