…likens the storming of the Capitol to the storming of GECOM’s Command Center
Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Harmon has condemned the storming of the United States (US) Capitol Building in Washington DC on Wednesday and has called on US leaders to ensure their nation acts “in a manner consistent with the Global Leadership role”.
In a press statement on Thursday, the Opposition Leader likened the droves to rioting protestors who descended on the Capitol to the storming and vandalizing of the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOMs) centre at Ashmin’s building in Georgetown in March, 2020.
The large number of Trump supporters caused the suspension of a joint session of Congress which sought to certify the electoral victory of President-elect, Joe Biden while the events at GECOM’s Center were aimed at stopping the tallying of Statements of Polls (SOPs) representatives of the then Opposition contended were being fraudulently conducted.
Harmon stated: “On that occasion, executives and agents of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) executed the dastardly act in the full view of several high-ranking western diplomats. This event was a precursor to the installation of a PPP regime whose legitimacy is the subject of judicial challenge in the High Court.”
The Opposition Leaders said his party is pleased that law and order was eventually restored at the Capitol Building and that the Legislators were allowed to complete their Constitutional duty. He noted that it is evident is that both Democrat and Republican Legislators were united in their call for the “rogue element” responsible for the uprising to face the full force of the U.S. law.
However, he opinioned that Guyana was not permitted the same when it came to their interruptions to the election process.
“On the contrary, in Guyana, those rogue elements who created mayhem, damage and serious threat to our Democracy, even though their identities are known, were never charged but instead rewarded with the full powers of our Government and access to the Treasury of Guyana. These crimes will never go unnoticed and unpunished by our people,” Harmon said, adding:
“The APNU+AFC is of the view that the United States of America will have to act in a manner consistent with the Global Leadership role it has exercised in decades past and it must do so quickly.”
