“Surama Culture Group and Kada Culture Group are from the North Rupununi and we in the Surama Cultura group were not contacted by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to go home and return formally as a result of any change of date for events as indicated by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs in its press release.” Leader of the North Rupununi Surama Culture Group Louann Allicock said during an interview with Village Voice News while on their way back to the Rupununi last Friday.
“The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs press release is intended to confuse the people of Guyana and lay blame to harrass the Mohameds.” This, according to Louann Allicock “is the continued discourse and method of the PPP when dealing with Amerindians who do not comply with their programme.”
Allicock said ” Look I feel exhausted and extremely disillusioned with the tactics of the People’s Progressive Party Civic.”
The Surama Culture Group Leader reiterated what she alleged in her first interview with Village Voice News that “the representative who usually help us is the person who told us we will not be able to participate in the Amerindian Heritage Month Celebration and that is was because of calls they had received from higher up. that we were sent packing and booted from the events.”
The Culture group leader said she was told that “it was because our group were seen posted on Mohameds Facebook Page receiving a keyboard that the Culture Group wrote and ask the Mohameds to assist with after the Government of Guyana had refused several request from us for a keyboard”
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs’ press release on Friday September 5, 2025 stated that the Surama Cultural Group was invited and sent back because of the date change of schedule events for the celebration of Amerindian Heritage Month. The press statement further stated that the group was invited to return in good faith.
This was however disputed by the Leader of the Surama Culture Group who noted that there were two groups out of the Surama area one mamed Kada Culture Group and the other Surama Culture Group. Allicock said ” the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs is either confused or telling outright lies to save face. We were sent away and never called or told to return.” the culture group leader reiterated.
