The Guyana Press Association (GPA) has expressed deep concern over recent attempts to censor and intimidate local journalists by government officials, opposition candidates, and party supporters. In a statement, the GPA emphasised the importance of respecting journalists and their work during the upcoming election season.
The association highlighted the professional and personal repercussions that acts of intimidation and allegations can have on its members. Of particular concern are threats directed at journalists investigating stories linked to corruption. The GPA stressed that journalists must be allowed to carry out their work without fear of intimidation or pressure to self-censor.
“Journalists should be allowed to work without being intimidated or forced to self-censor,” the statement said. The GPA called on all parties involved to immediately desist from intimidatory practices.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to the core principles of journalism, urging members to remain objective, transparent, and balanced in their reporting.
The GPA’s statement underscores growing concerns over press freedoms in Guyana as the country approaches its next general and regional elections, stressing the need for a safe and independent media environment.
