PPP Govt’s Plan to Import Foreign Labour a Betrayal of Guyanese Workers

Dear Editor,

As a trade unionist and activist with the United Workers Party, I am deeply disturbed by the recent intentions of the PPP Government to import foreign labor into Guyana. This move blatantly disrespects and disregards the hardworking people of our nation.

This is not just poor policy; it is a betrayal of every Guyanese worker who has been denied the opportunity to grow, earn, and contribute meaningfully to our economy. From the bauxite workers in Linden to the rice farmers in Essequibo and the sugar workers in Berbice, our citizens are more than capable of building this country if only given the chance.

If there is a shortage of skilled labor in Guyana, it reflects the Government’s failure to invest in technical training, apprenticeships, and job creation initiatives. Rather than addressing these structural issues, the PPP seeks to import foreign workers, further marginalizing our youth, driving down wages, and threatening job security across various sectors.

This is an insult to every unemployed young person, every underpaid public servant, and every trained professional who has been forced to migrate in search of better opportunities. The Government must prioritise its citizens, not replace them.

We must demand better. We must advocate for a labor policy that puts Guyanese first—one that strengthens our human capital, protects our workforce, and builds a future where prosperity is shared by all.

Yours truly,
Lorenzo
