Georgetown, Guyana – Rickford Burke, President of the Guyana Caribbean International Democracy (GCID), slammed the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) as a “criminal enterprise” in a fiery statement, claiming every Guyanese hit with US sanctions ties back to the ruling party.

Burke pointed out that sanctioned figures like the Mohameds, businessmen Nazar and Azruddin, and former Permanent Secretary Mae Thomas all stem from PPP ranks.  Thomas, a confirmed PPP Central Committee member who resigned after her 2024 sanctions for corruption, won’t run in the upcoming elections.

The Mohameds, once financial backers of PPP leader President Irfaan Ali, faced penalties for gold export fraud and bribery.  Bharrat Jagdeo was warned that at least two PPP candidates for the September 1, 2025, general elections are under US investigation and could face sanctions soon, per CGID sources.  A new announcement by the US should trigger more bank account closures, following Demerara Bank’s precedent with sanctioned individuals, throwing Jagdeo and the PPP into chaos.

Burke ripped the PPP’s campaign for labeling Azruddin Mohamed a “sanction man” while ignoring their own ties, urging the opposition to hammer them on it. “The real criminals are in the PPP,” he declared, calling the party an “incubator for international crooks” endangering Guyana’s people and financial system.

Recent US actions in June 2025 sanctioned more Guyanese for drug trafficking, including police officials like Himnauth Sawh and ex-officer Mark Cromwell, fueling debates on corruption under PPP rule.
