The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) proudly joins the global community in observing International Nurses Day 2025, under the timely and powerful theme: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.”
This theme serves as a critical reminder that nurses are not only caregivers but are also indispensable to national development and economic resilience.
International Nurses Day, observed on May 12th, marks Florence Nightingale’s birthday and her founding of modern nursing. Her legacy of compassionate service, reform, and advocacy continues to inspire generations of nurses worldwide. Like Nightingale, today’s nurses work tirelessly, often in silence, to heal, comfort, and transform lives.
This occasion is an opportunity to honour the unwavering service, resilience, and compassion of nurses across Guyana, many of whom are GPSU members serving within the employment of the Government of Guyana. Nurses are the cornerstone of our healthcare system, delivering essential services in hospitals, clinics, and communities nationwide, often under immense pressure with limited resources and inadequately compensate.
In a country experiencing rapid economic expansion through the oil, energy, and gas sectors, the role of nurses has never been more vital. A growing economy requires a strong, healthy population, and that begins with a well-supported nursing workforce.
Key Issues We Must Address:
• Nurse Well-being Must Be a National Priority
Nurses face increasing workloads, staff shortages, and emotional strain. Their mental, emotional, and physical well-being must be safeguarded through improved working conditions, wellness programs, and strong workplace protections.
• Investment in Nurses is Investment in National Development
To meet the demands of our evolving economy, nurses must be properly compensated, offered continuous professional development, and provided with safe and supportive environments. A robust nursing workforce strengthens public health systems and underpins economic stability.
• Impact of Mass Nurse Migration
Guyana is experiencing a significant exodus of experienced nurses to countries like the UK, USA, and Canada in pursuit of better compensation and career opportunities. This brain drain threatens the continuity and quality of care, particularly in hinterland and underserved regions. Urgent policy reforms are necessary to retain skilled professionals and make nursing a sustainable career at home.
Nurses in an Energy-Driven Economy
As Guyana positions itself as a key player in the global energy sector, our healthcare system must evolve in tandem. Nurses are essential to maintaining a healthy, productive workforce, which is foundational to continued economic growth. Social investment in human capital, particularly in nursing, must accompany financial gains.
A Global Call with Local Responsibility
The GPSU echoes the call of Public Services International (PSI) for all governments to protect the rights of nurses, enact equitable labor policies, and ensure sustained investment in healthcare systems. Recognition must go hand-in-hand with respect, protection, and fair remuneration.
As we mark this important day, the GPSU reaffirms its steadfast commitment to championing the dignity, safety, and professional advancement of nurses. We stand in solidarity with nurses across Guyana and call on the Government and all stakeholders to take urgent, meaningful action appropriate to show real value for our nurses.
Let this year’s theme be more than a slogan, let it be a declaration that caring for nurses is both a moral responsibility and an economic necessity.
