Dear Editor,

On Sunday, March 9, 2025, our nation was deeply shocked by the heartbreaking news of the passing of young firefighter Voshaun Manbodh, who tragically succumbed to the injuries he sustained while heroically attempting to extinguish the fire that consumed Mae’s Private School on Third and Sheriff Streets, Subryanville, Georgetown.

I have several questions for the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Guyana Fire Service: What was concealed in this matter? Why was the public not informed about the injured firefighters? Why was there a lack of reporting on such an important incident, leaving the public in the dark?

It was devastating to read the accounts shared by the family of young Manbodh during his hospitalization. I sincerely hope that a thorough and transparent investigation will be conducted. While it has been mentioned that the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) will investigate, I remain concerned about whether true justice will be served.

When our loved ones are hospitalized, we trust that they will receive the best possible care. However, the troubling reports emerging from public healthcare facilities reveal a growing crisis within our health sector that demands urgent attention.

I look forward to further updates on this tragic incident. To Voshaun’s mother, Deon, and the rest of his grieving family, please accept my deepest condolences. May you find comfort in the words of Psalm 30:5: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

Yours truly,

Annette Ferguson, MP
