Minister’s “Ignorant” Remarks on $7.2B Guava and $600M Plantain Chip Markets Expose Shocking Economic Blindspot

In a recent display of astonishing ignorance during her budget 2025 speech, Minister Susan Rodrigues belittled the efforts of industrious entrepreneurs in the guava cheese and plantain chip industries in Guyana and across the globe. Such disparagement not only reveals a profound lack of vision but also a crass disregard for sectors contributing significantly to the economy.

The global guava market of which guava cheese was identified as a significant component was valued at approximately USD 7.2 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 13.0 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 6.1%.  While specific data on guava cheese is limited, the overall growth of guava-based products indicates a promising future for this niche segment.

Similarly, the plantain chip market is experiencing substantial growth. Reports indicate that the global plantain chip market size was USD 644.24 million in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 982.52 million by 2033, at a CAGR of 5.42% during the forecast period.

These figures underscore the vitality and potential of these industries. For a government official to dismiss the hard work and innovation driving these sectors is not only insulting but also indicative of a troubling disconnect from economic realities and explains why the PPP government lacks vision, thoughtfulness and innovation. Somehow it escapes Susan Rodrigues that entrepreneurs in these markets are contributing to economic growth; while preserving and promoting cultural heritage through traditional products.  It also seems to escape the minister that these are products for which there is significant global demand.

The minister’s comments highlight how important it is for leaders to recognize and support the diverse facets of our economy. Dismissing burgeoning industries reflects a bias and narrow-mindedness that hampers progress. The Minister’s comments are an ignorant slight against hardworking individuals and a testament to a broader failure to appreciate and foster economic diversity.
