Several persons are in custody for allegedly trafficking bulks of “Creepie” weed from neighbouring Venezuela, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has disclosed.
In a statement issued late Saturday night, CANU said that 79 parcels of suspected cannabis, weighing 85.804 kilograms, were incepted at a housing on the Essequibo Coast on Saturday, December 19, 2020.
It explained that the discovery was made by CANU officers, who at the time was conducting a search at Lot 221 Clarke Street, Dartmouth Essequibo Coast. During the search, the suspected cannabis was unearthed in suitcases in a room. Occupants of the house, and other connected persons were arrested and remain in custody as the investigation continues.
“The suspected narcotic is believed to be commercial “Creepie weed” trafficked from Venezuela,” CANU said.
In the statement, James Singh, CANU’s Head, said the Unit has launched a countrywide campaign to bring traffickers to justice.
“This seizure comes at a time when CANU has been further widening its grasp across the country more particularly in Berbice, Essequibo and other key locations. The Unit’s key aim is to disrupt smuggling routes,” Singh said.
He added: “CANU will no longer wait at known wharves and ports but will work with our local communities, Inter-agencies and our International Counterparts to uncover and intercept narcotic traffickers in their niches and comfort zones.”
