By Mark DaCosta- The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that left a bystander injured during a police chase in Georgetown. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 14, 2024, on Robb Street, outside a popular nightclub.
According to police reports, Cassell Nurse, a 27-year-old businessman from La Penitence, Georgetown, was shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire between police officers and suspected criminals. Nurse, who was standing next to his vehicle at the time, was not involved in the altercation and is currently recovering at the Georgetown Public Hospital. His condition is reported as stable.
The OPR, which is responsible for handling complaints and investigating allegations of misconduct against police officers, is now tasked with reviewing the actions of the ranks involved in the chase. This department plays a crucial role in maintaining accountability and public trust in the police force, ensuring that any incidents involving officers are thoroughly examined for compliance with operational standards and legal procedures.
On the night of the incident, a police anti-crime patrol, led by a senior officer and other ranks, was on duty when they received a tip-off that two men on motorcycles were acting suspiciously near Bourda Market. The men reportedly fled as soon as they were approached by the patrol officers, sparking a high-speed chase through the streets of Georgetown.
The chase intensified as the suspects, riding down Robb Street, attempted to evade the pursuing officers. One of the suspects brandished a firearm and opened fire on the police. In response, one of the officers discharged his service weapon in the direction of the shooter. It was during this exchange that Cassell Nurse, an innocent bystander, was struck by a bullet.
At the time of the shooting, Nurse was standing next to his parked vehicle outside a nightclub. He was transported to the hospital by authorities, where he received treatment for his injuries.
While the suspects managed to escape the scene, the police have not released further information regarding their identities or whether any arrests have been made. The investigation by the OPR will likely focus on the conduct of the officers involved in the chase and shooting, as well as the circumstances that led to the bystander being injured.
This incident has understandably raised concerns about public safety during police operations, especially in areas with heavy civilian presence. It also highlights the need for continued scrutiny of police procedures to ensure that innocent individuals are not caught in the crossfire during criminal pursuits.
The OPR’s investigation will most likely seek to determine whether the officers acted in accordance with the police force’s guidelines, and if there was any negligence involved in the handling of the situation.
